Title Sequence

What Lies Beneath (2000)

Analysing the opening sequence of the above film, the suspenseful mood was created with a scene underwater with words which seem to flicker in the water and then fade.

The ghost-like title of the film under water suggests that water is significant in the film.  It creates an eerie effect and suggests the film's genre.

The sound track adds to the suspense with the high pitched piano creating a chilling note.  The discordant off-key notes suggests that something is wrong.

The choking and gasping of the woman suggests that she is a vulnerable character.

The dark and low key lighting also indicates dark emotions and a sense of anxiety

Dark misty colours reflect the mood.  Blue colours also reflect the water so that the audience infers that water is important
